Hey Bookworms,
This review has been overdue - stupid snow mold and sinusitis knocked me down for the count!
I received a copy of "Then Hate Me" as an ARC and finally finished it last night. This gem was released on March 22nd, and I hope you all get a chance to read it or add it to your TBR!
Entering into this, I wasn't aware there was a book one, making this the second in a series. Surprisingly, I didn't feel I missed vital information by not have reading the first book, aside from some context regarding previous interactions between the main male character (MMC) and the female main character's (FMC) older brother. Nonetheless, everything really did fall into place, and I found myself thoroughly engrossed.
Overall, I really did enjoy this ARC - honestly, I really did enjoy the random narrative surrounding the Greek mythology inspired, Theophane event – it was downright captivating and truly you could have a book on this part alone! I believe Marksen was well-portrayed, and I admired Olivia's strong-willed and independent nature. Her emphasis on self-reliance, detached from familial ties or legacy, was commendable and refreshing, particularly within the context of the billionaire/mafia genre, where we dont see this as often.
However, despite the engaging storyline, I felt there were minor plot holes. The pacing seemed rushed, and I remained skeptical about the rapid progression of romantic feelings between characters – was it genuine love or mere infatuation? The story would have benefited from more detailed character development and a gradual progression of time. Marksen's stubbornness and sole focus on seeking revenge were aspects that bothered me. Seeing him ignore Olivia's often accurate and on point advice, despite her perceptiveness, was frustrating. Additionally, the lack of resolution regarding the revenge subplot left me slightly annoyed. The unresolved storyline involving the Astrids and the abrupt ending left loose ends hanging.
Despite my reservations, I found the book enthralling. Its ability to stand alone, even without prior knowledge of the series, speaks volumes about its quality. Well done ladies!
xoxo
